HHA Street Teams

The HHA Street Teams is an after school program modeled after the recording industry term that describes young music enthusiasts who work for record labels to increase artist exposure and record sales. These street team members are usually well versed about the artists they promote and work to pitch their attributes to potential listeners. Our Street Team program borrows from this concept training middle and high school youth to learn about the Hiphop Archive collection and trains them as special “docents” of Hiphop music and culture. The program operates during the school year as well as the summer on projects of interest targeted by the Hiphop Archive staff. Past Street Team projects include archival work on Hiphop politics, folklore and international Hiphop. HHA Street Team members work in mentor relationships with Hiphop Archive staff to learn research and archival skills. They in turn make presentations in their schools and communities about the value of archival research, Hiphop music and culture. Members of our Street Teams are also asked to serve as youth representatives on research, conference and roundtable projects. Street Team members are recruited through our community outreach activities and partnerships with local schools. Our middle and high school partnerships are currently focused in communities where we have Hiphop Archive mentors available to facilitate programs. To become a Street Team representative contact us at streetteams@hiphoparchive.org. You can also download an application on this website. Our current Street Team cities are in Oakland, Cambridge, Los Angeles, New York, and Minneapolis.
