In recent years, the rise of online streaming and digital downloads has meant that a new generation of music lovers may have been deprived of an entire experience. Samples can take us back to the time when the music we’re hearing was someone else’s playlist and soundtrack. Because of this, The Hiphop Archive and Research Institute (HARI) encourages everyone to explore what was happening in the world, country, city, community, and neighborhood when both the classic album was produced as well as the samples that contributed to the album’s greatness.
When we sample we are placing those memories in dialogue with the Classic Album and today. The Underground can liberate memories, feelings and the substance of our creative and intellectual expressions if we know how to both listen and hear.
