Seattle
On this page
In the past, Seattle has been famous for many things: Coffee, Microsoft, The Space Needle, the grunge scene, the rain, and the list goes on! But what is often overlooked is Seattle’s growing Hiphop community. Sir Mix-A-Lot first made waves in Hiphop in 1988 with the single “Posse on Broadway”. Many people believed that he was a New York native after hearing this track, but he was actually referring to a busy and eclectic Seattle street named Broadway. Another fresh Hiphop group to come out of Seattle is the Blue Scholars. This duo (one DJ and one MC) often reference Seattle in their songs. For example, “Southside Revival” refers to South Seattle and “The Ave” refers to University Ave, where many college students spend their free time. Overall, Seattle is a budding hip-hop zone. –Keisha Frazier, Stanford University
