A White Man’s Look at Race and The Hip-Hop Industry

Tuesday, May 8, 2007

Other People's Property
“Other People’s Property” is a very good book that is at its best when its author acts like a DJ. But don’t get it twisted: [Jason] Tanz sees hip-hop as text more than as sonic phenomenon or, for that matter, stone groove. “Other People’s Property” is made up of nine journalistic pieces, each a mix of reportage and personal reflection about race and the industry of hip-hop. It’s freaky, equally in love with Western philosophers such as Jean Baudrillard and the classic albums from hip-hop’s golden era. In a very hip-hop effort to get his shine on, the author mashes up his prose, cutting in and out of reportage and confessional styles.

The Education of Too Short

Posted on Monday, July 31, 2006

Too Short
Born Todd Shaw 40 years ago in Los Angeles, where he recently relocated after 12 years in Atlanta, Too Short says he never was a pimp, though he planned on becoming one until early success in the music business altered his career course[…]was at first little more than a fantasy for Too Short, whose clear enunciation betrays his middle-class upbringing and private schooling in Southern California. Pimping became a possibility, however, when he moved to Oakland to live with his mother in the early ’80s. He found himself for the first time in public school, at Fremont High in East Oakland.

Posted on Monday, July 31, 2006

Crazy Legs of Rocksteady Crew
Almost thirty years ago in 1977, the Rocksteady Crew came to life and set a standard in the Hip-Hop culture that would echo decades later. Richard ‘Crazy Legs‘ Colón, a then youngster with the liquid motion, evolved from a crew favorite to President of the Rocksteady empire. One of the longest standing crews in Hip-Hop, the Rocksteady Crew is much more than the league of extraordinary members that compose it. B-Boys, B-Girls, MCs, producers and activists alike, individually walk this earth to respect and represent this historic army in their own unique ways–with their leader Crazy Legs still standing and still dancing, after several surgeries and herniated discs.
