A White Man’s Look at Race and The Hip-Hop Industry

Tuesday, May 8, 2007

Other People's Property
“Other People’s Property” is a very good book that is at its best when its author acts like a DJ. But don’t get it twisted: [Jason] Tanz sees hip-hop as text more than as sonic phenomenon or, for that matter, stone groove. “Other People’s Property” is made up of nine journalistic pieces, each a mix of reportage and personal reflection about race and the industry of hip-hop. It’s freaky, equally in love with Western philosophers such as Jean Baudrillard and the classic albums from hip-hop’s golden era. In a very hip-hop effort to get his shine on, the author mashes up his prose, cutting in and out of reportage and confessional styles.

Cover of 'Infamy'
This cutting edge documentary not only unmasks the faces of seven individuals addicted to graffiti, but it exposes their thoughts, feelings, faults and fears — an avenue unrivaled by any graff film to date[…]”Graffiti is like the United Nations. There is a representative from all corners of the earth. Black, white and the many shades in between, man or woman.”

Dem Hoodstarz Prepare Debut, Look To Set Bay Area Off

Dem Hoodstarz of East Palo Alto, California

SoundSlam
Aug. 20, 2006

With the recent success of the E-40 and Keak Da Sneak, the Bay Area is set to introduce its next superstars. Meet Dem Hoodstarz! Comprised of group-members Band-Aide & Scoot, they are prepared to drop their SMC recordings debut, Band-Aide and Scoot, on September 12, 2006.

SMC Recordings stands as the Bay Area’s premier power-house label. They are the current recording home of such Hip Hop stars as Sann Quinn, Bulls With Fury, and Balance. The thriving label immediately took notice and signed Dem Hoodstarz to a joint venture deal.

Will Bronson, co-owner of SMC Recordings says, “Dem Hoodstarz are THE act everyone is looking for to break the Bay Area, Band-Aide & Scoot are the true definition of Hyphy. The album is further proof that we are ushering in the future of Hip Hop.”

Since the signing, Dem HoodStarz have kept busy pushing mix tapes, rocking arenas, launching their movie careers and having one of the top radio/club singles in their region with “Getz Your Grown Man On.”

Band-Aide & Scoot spared no expense when it came to production on the album, they enlisted legendary Bay Area producer E-A-Ski, as well as Traxamillion (”Super Hyphy”), and E-40’s son - Droop-e. “With Band-Aide & Scoot, we brought the ‘hood to the Hyphy movement,” says Band-Aide.

Band Aide and Scoot came together in 2004 and released Can’t Leave Rap Alone featuring Keak Da Sneak, which received serious recognition by San Francisco’s top Hip Hop station, 106 KMEL and became one of the most requested singles. This in turn helped Dem HoodStarz win the Best Rap Group Award at the 2004 Demo Fast Break.

Be sure to be on the look out for Dem HoodStarz taking over the rap game this fall with the release of Band-Aide & Scoot.
