“Other People’s Property” is a very good book that is at its best when its author acts like a DJ. But don’t get it twisted: [Jason] Tanz sees hip-hop as text more than as sonic phenomenon or, for that matter, stone groove. “Other People’s Property” is made up of nine journalistic pieces, each a mix of reportage and personal reflection about race and the industry of hip-hop. It’s freaky, equally in love with Western philosophers such as Jean Baudrillard and the classic albums from hip-hop’s golden era. In a very hip-hop effort to get his shine on, the author mashes up his prose, cutting in and out of reportage and confessional styles.

West Coast Hip Hop Greats Host HSAN Event

California-based, international hip- hop stars Tyrese, Too Short, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, MC Lyte, Melyssa Ford, YoYo, Chingo Bling, Kid Frost, Lamar Odom, Taraji Henson, Bryan Leach and the Terrero Brothers will join the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN) and President/CEO Dr. Benjamin Chavis for the Los Angeles Hip-Hop Summit on Saturday, September 30th from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Snoop Dogg will make a special appearance. Doors open to students at Noon.

The Los Angeles Hip-Hop Summit will take place at the University of Southern California’s Bovard Auditorium located at 3551 Trousdale Parkway in Los Angeles.

HSAN’s title sponsor and partner is Chrysler Financial. The Hip-Hop Summit on Financial Empowerment’s “Get Your Money Right” National Tour, now in its second successful year, brings together the powerful combination of hip- hop stars and Chrysler Financial experts to speak to students and community members about the importance of financial literacy.

The topics to be covered include the basics of banking, home ownership, repairing bad credit and understanding credit scores, entrepreneurship and vehicle financing. The “Get Your Money Right” national tour includes stops in two additional cities, including October 14 in Dallas and October 28 in Toronto, Canada.

The Hip-Hop Summit on Financial Empowerment is a grassroots effort to help engage young people in discussions about the importance of personal finance.

“With rising tuition costs, the cost of books, gasoline, etc., young people can’t afford not to have financial know-how,” said William F. Jones Jr., Vice President - Chrysler Financial. “Chrysler Financial’s expert financial panelists join with Russell Simmons and Dr. Chavis in our collaborative mission to help attendees effectively manage their personal financial situations by providing them with real life examples and a financial workbook to support them in making the right choices.”

“Hip-hop on the West Coast is as strong as ever,” emphasized Dr. Chavis. “The Los Angeles Hip-Hop Summit focuses on the opportunities to better understand the importance of financial literacy and empowerment. We will celebrate all of the good work being done throughout the city by many grassroots organizations, as well as pay tribute to the growth and expansion of hip-hop culture throughout Los Angeles.”

“The Hip Hop Summit Action Network recognizes the significant contributions made by Latinos to Hip Hop as a culture,” affirmed Jasmin Franjul, Director, Artist and Diversity Relations, HSAN. “We are excited to have Kid Frost, Chingo Bling, Jessy and Ulysses Terrero joining us in our mission to empower young people at the ‘Get Your Money Right’ Hip Hop Summit in Los Angeles.”

The “Get Your Money Right” workbook, which will be given to all participants, is available in both English and Spanish and is downloadable on the http://www.hsan.org/ site.

The media partner for the Los Angeles Hip-Hop Summit on Financial Empowerment is KDAY - 93.5 FM Los Angeles. Community partners include the University of Southern California - Black Student Union, California State University - Black Student Union, Los Angeles Public Housing Authority, USC - Asian Pacific American Student Association and NAACP - Los Angeles Chapter.
