Abstract/Synopsis:

Commissioned by The Brooklyn Museum of Art for an upcoming exhibition on Hip Hop, the Youth Organizers Television crew research and examine aspects of Hip Hop culture that interest or concern them. They conduct interviews with their peers, Hip Hop scholars, artists, and persons on the street to collect a range of opinions on the themes of race, sexism and self-representation, homophobia, commercialization and the reciprocal influence of youth on Hip Hop and Hip Hop on youth. These themes, they recognize, exist in our larger culture and are manifest in various ways within Hip Hop. Ultimately the tape looks critically at the culture and celebrates its strengths, such as Hip Hop's role as a unifying force among youth of different backgrounds and communities.
