African American Popular Culture

In this course we will examine the socio-cultural foundations of African American Popular culture with a focus on the 20th century. We will trace its development from within the context of Black cultural, social, and political movements and through the primary figures that defined its contours. We will further investigate how Black popular culture reflects the evolution of African American expressive culture and the core sensibilities of various Black communities.
