Beau D. Bothwell
Columbia University
Hiphop
2009

This course explores the sounds and cultures of hip-hop through an examination of the places where it arose, developed, and mutated into the myriad forms it currently inhabits. Beginning with the five boroughs of New York City, we will discuss the origins, aesthetics, and controversies of hip-hop, en route to an examination of the current transnational and translocal world in which hip-hop music and culture is produced, consumed, and lived.
